Horizon Environmental was employed by Galliford Try to remove and dispose of asbestos as part of a major refurbishment project that the construction group was undertaking at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, Kent.
The Oxleas NHS Trust hospital had opened at the Frognal Avenue site in 1974 and was undergoing a multi-million-pound, multi-phase redevelopment to improve the facilities and extend the services offered to the local community.
The project required the removal and disposal of notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos containing materials, identified on the issued refurbishment survey, within block B of the hospital over a 42-month period.
The work was to be carried out in three phases in line with the refurbishment project. Phase one was on the ground and first floors, phase two was on the third floor and phase three was on the second floor.
Although the work areas were sectioned off by the principle contractor during each phase, the hospital remained in operation throughout the project. To avoid any issues regarding noise and any possible delays this could have had on the programme, 80% of the work was carried out outside of normal working hours.
The work for all three phases was completed within budget and on time. During this period of work, we carried out further various works on site for the Trust and other contractors.
Matthew Grant, Project Manager, Estates & Facillities Directorate, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust said: “Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust have worked with Horizon for over five years. They have been an important part of the redevelopment of Queen Mary's Hospital. Horizon’s service has been market tested on numerous occasions and they have proven to be good value for money. They undertake a lot of the work out of hours and we very rarely walk into any problems. They are responsive, their site operatives are courteous and helpful and we trust them to manage the work on our behalf.”
