Horizon Environmental Ltd was directly appointed to undertake a complex asbestos removal program across the Avery Hill Campus, including extensive underground service tunnels and confined basements. The project required stripping all contaminated surfaces to bare structure to facilitate major M&E upgrades.
The works involved:
The project required careful sequencing and frequent client sign-off of all risk assessments and method statements prior to commencement.
Due to confined space hazards, Horizon implemented stringent control measures including live permit-to-work systems, continuous gas monitoring, two-way radios, A-frame rescue winches, and mock extraction drills. All operatives were confined-space trained, medically assessed, and supported by topman supervision.
Challenges included restricted ventilation, live university operations, complex ACM distribution, and emergency preparedness. Mitigations included enhanced air quality systems, staggered work patterns, and redundant access routes.
The works were completed safely, on time, and to budget, with zero incidents. The University commended Horizon’s exemplary safety culture and operational control.
